- Pooja room is a sacred place that emits a positive aura to help you get into a meditative state. As per Vastu Science, the pooja room should harness a multitude of energies through temple design and direction.
- It is believed that the Pooja room or mandir can only be placed in the North-East direction. But there are several directions (other than North East) where you can place the Pooja altar or mandir at the home temple. One of the best directions for the Pooja room is the West direction. West is the direction ruled by Lord Varun – The God of prosperity. He has the power to fulfill your wishes. Many ancient Hindu temples have the main idol placed in the West direction. East is a favorable direction for placing the Pooja room.
- Place the pooja room depending upon the main deity you pray to. Keeping idols in the pooja room is a major task. It should be done with consideration and planning. The best direction to place the idols is north-east, east, and west. Keep the idols away from the north because the worshipper sits on the south which breaks the magnetic rule of earth. The ideal placement of idol would be a few inches away from the wall and at least six inches from the ground. Portraits of the dead and violent paintings do not belong in the pooja room. The idols or images of Gods should be around your chest height.

- Never keep broken idols, torn images, pictures of dead people, war images, dry flowers, faded pictures, rusted lamps in pooja room. Avoid storing valuable items, money, or jewels as it is considered disrespectful to hide under the temple. Idols should be clean, new, and put together for a blissful time in the room.
- Offering food items or feeding our Gods is a way of respect and gratitude. Vastu Science advises keeping the food offerings in front of the idols as a mark of respect.
- The location of the pooja room is vital for its auspicious aura. Avoid the basement or top floors of the house for the pooja room. Place the temple on the ground level.
- A low ceiling is preferable for the pooja room. A pyramid-shaped or gopuram top creates a positive atmosphere. A threshold and two-door entry are considered auspicious. The lower ceiling coupled with the gopuram adds symmetry. It would help you in slipping into a meditative state easily. A threshold keeps ants and insects out of the sacred space.
- Store religious books, lamps, and pooja related items in a cupboard which is pointed towards the southeast. No storage should be constructed above the idol or temple. Storage should face the south-east and it should not obstruct the sunlight.
- Create a meditative atmosphere using cool colors such as white, light blue, or pale yellow. If you choose marble then white or pale yellow or ochre would be ideal colors. Cool colors keep the space bright, while dark and loud shades can be distracting.
- Avoid using a red color cloth if your Pooja room is in the North East
- Use shades of blue, green, and light yellow in the NorthEast, East, and West.

- If Pooja room is in the East, avoid silver idols or utensils. Use steel, copper, or brass idols/utensils.
- Silver or gold or brass utensils are ideal for a pooja room in the West.
- Avoid keeping two or more photos/idols of the same God/ Goddess.
- It is better to have a wooden mandir in the NorthEast, East, and South East. White marble is recommended for a temple in the West.
- Keep the mandir well-lit with proper lighting.
- Do not construct a pooja room next to the toilet or below a staircase.
- Pooja room doors and windows must open towards the north or the east.
- Place lamps and Agni-Kund in the south-east zone.
- Do not use the pooja space for any other purpose.
