Can you sleep without a pillow? 99% of the answer will be “No”. People have been using pillow since ancient era. It was not as much comfortable as of now. Some of them were using stone blocks and others were using ceramic slabs as their pillows. But now a day’s pillows made of different materials are available and it became a part of luxury too.

The shape of our spine is slightly curved. Pillow helps to maintain the proper alignment of the spine. If you did not keep the proper spine alignment with the other body parts while sleeping, it may cause strain to the muscles, ligaments and joints. If you sleep regularly with a misaligned spine, it can also weaken your disc and it may lead to serious disc related issues.

So if you don’t have a habit of using a pillow, start to use it from today itself.

Incorrect use of pillows can also create problems. So depending on your comfortable sleeping positions, you can use the pillows. Piling up with too many pillows or using hard pillows are not good for health.

How To Choose A Pillow?

According to your body size, it would be better to choose the pillows with height in the range of 4 to 6 inches. This will give a perfect support to your spine neck and shoulders.

If you are comfortable to sleep on your side, then you should use two pillows, one beneath your head and other between the knees. If you are a back sleeper, then you should keep two thin pillows, one under the head and other under your knees. If you are comfortable to sleep on your stomach, then you should not use a pillow and try to change your position. Health experts say that, it is the worst position of sleeping because when you lay on your stomach, your spine will be in more curve shape and the neck turns to the side. This will disturb the proper alignment of the spine with other body parts. If you keep a pillow to elevate your head, then again it can have an adverse affect on your health.
